About Us

We've been getting people on the water since 9 May 2014.

The centre is a fully accredited RYA training centre offering:

  • A wide range of RYA sailing and powerboat courses for ages 5+
  • Race training programmes
  • Instructor training courses
  • Professional instructor training course
  • Schools & Groups programmes including residential packages
  • A variety of charitable programmes including "Rod Shipley Sail for a Fiver" youth scheme (in conjunction with the Chesil Trust.)

The Centre is special - it was started by the Trustees of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation and operates as a not-for-profit centre. As well as the usual sailing courses, the Foundation use the Centre to develop specific sailing programmes in line with the Charity's objectives. For full details on the Foundation and our charitable activities, please click here

Many of our Olympic sailors have described the first time they were given charge of a boat as their moment of clarity – the first moment they felt true responsibility and in command of their destiny. Our Centre allows us to offer this first moment to many more people across the UK and beyond.

“Reflecting the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’s objective to inspire the next generation through sailing, our Sailing Centre is a place where we can capture Andrew’s drive and determination by delivering everything from taster sessions, school groups, RYA courses and longer term development and mentoring.”

Andrew Simpson Foundation

The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation was founded in memory of, and inspired by, Olympic sailing Gold medallist, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. The Founding trustees are Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah.

The Foundation honours the life and legacy of a sailor who was passionate about encouraging and helping others fulfill their aims. Its simple objective is to “inspire the next generation” by using sailing to improve the lives of young people across the world.

From 2017, re-branded the Andrew Simpson Foundation : The Sailing Charity, offers the challenges of a sailing & watersports environment to promote health and wellbeing, and to develop personal skills that will improve a young person’s ability to succeed in life.

A yearly grant-giving process from the charity offers a wide range of support, both financial and/or practical to not-for-profit sailing initiatives and organisations across the world. Each project is assessed against the Foundation’s objectives of ensuring that every young person is given a chance to sail, and in a way which will develop them as individuals, in line with Andrew Simpson’s own values and achievements.

Up to and including 2017 to date, there have been 45 individual projects delivered and grants pledged totalling £736,000 in 12 countries.

In May 2014 the Foundation was given the opportunity to establish the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The Centre operates as a not-for-profit sailing centre and also offers the Foundation the opportunity to develop specific sailing programmes in line with the charity’s objectives, and to carry out research into the benefits of regular dinghy sailing on young people aged 9-13 years.

Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is a company limited by guarantee and registered charity in England & Wales No 1152060.
